What Next

Well this one is very hard for me to write about. I have thought about it repeatedly for a few weeks now, but I had trouble finding the right words.

Those few weeks back I received a phone-call. A phone-call I always thought might come, but in what way, shape or form I knew nothing of. It still does not feel real.

Today I received an envelope; an envelope that contained a lot of information. Information I have been looking for, for quite some time now.  What was inside made clear to me a number of things.  Among them: what I would do, who I would report to, what I would study, where I should turn up, what I would take home. But most importantly it told me what was next. Something I have thought about my entire life. Something I have been asked about my entire life. What next?

Next, I become an Investment Accountant.

    I'm sure I'll keep posting on a casual basis about job-life. And still got a pile of rejection apps to publish.

  16. Haven't started yet :( I suppose that's the downside with factset. But I knew I had to wait till end of Feb when I applied last year so just needed to kill some time in-between. Starting in 1,5 weeks now. Way excited!
    When do you start your new job then?

    I'm getting paid a reasonable salary for an accountancy position. It's better than the big4 I know that. But just cuz it's private equity doesn't mean I'm racking it in.

    Living in London with over £30,000 in student debt, I will be on Sainsburys Basics for quite some time to come.

  23. Yeah I'm in the same boat.. high rent, low salaries, rising prices etc.etc. I think its time to find a new country to live in, UK ain't what it used to be.

    Congrats on your job offer, sounds like a great job. I have actually just got a job myself in Investment Management so it seems like companies are actively recruiting grads once again, compared to the end of last year where weeks would go by without a phone call from a agency.

    Anyway just wanted to say congrats..... your blog has helped time go by just that little bit quicker whilst being unemployed.

    I have just come across your blog and it has been an amazing read. I wish I had come across it during my own grad job search(Stressful times), it would have made feel so much more better. I suppose you are a year into your job and I hope it is treating you well.

    I've just come across your bloomberg after googling 'what does a factset consultant do' and I am still none the wiser!

    I have an interview coming up at a private equity firm for an accountants position, please give me some pointers?

    What does your role actually entail? what kind of questions should I expect to come up tomorrow?

  30. Hi there,

    The questions they will ask are not what's important. But the question you've just asked me is precisely what you need to do. Ask them questions about what the role entails and what development it will provide. Ask ask ask. I really value people who are not afraid to ask questions. If an interviewing grad asked me questions and showed he/she was keen to learn, they'd be at the top of my list. If they also then showed a real interest in the job, I'd give them an offer.

    I had written a bunch of other stuff but accidently closed my browser. I hope this is of some help.
